One of the most common problems in the lives of most people I know is stress. In fact, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t experienced stress or anxiety in the past six months. From conversations with family members and close friends to reading Facebook posts and seeing stories on Instagram, I think it’s safe to say that stress is a common tax on our mental health.

According to this report by the American Psychological Association, up to 77% of people in our country regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress, and 73% regularly experience psychological symptoms due to stress. Simply put, we have a stress problem in our nation.
Over the past several years, I have learned that if my goal is to eliminate stress from my life completely, I am wasting my time. The truth is that stress will always be in our lives because we live in a broken world where hard things happen. Instead of spinning my wheels trying to meet an unrealistic goal, I am learning to shift my perspective from eliminating stress to managing stress in a healthy way.
Essential oils are a natural tool that can help power stress and calm anxiety.
Now, I’ll be the first one to say that this isn’t easy. I have struggled with self-medicating and avoidance and myriad other unhealthy stress-management strategies. But lately, introducing a few simple routines into my life has made a world of difference. When used along with stress-management techniques, essential oils are a wonderful and simple tool that can help you lower your stress levels and calm down when life gets to be too much.
Here’s a quick guide on how to use three essential oils for calming and relaxation so that you can feel refreshed and empowered to meet the demands of your life head-on.
Whether it’s diffused by itself or in a blend, applied directly to the wrists and bottoms of your feet (funny, right?! I promise it works like magic!) or used as a nighttime linen spray, lavender is our family’s go-to for calming.
Inhaling the aroma of lavender can be useful for supporting many other natural processes in our bodies, but calming and clearing the mind is one of its most well-known uses.
If you’re new to the lavender oil world, try adding three drops of lavender essential oil to 1 cup of epsom salts and pour under warm, running water to create your own spa-like stress-relief experience just before bedtime. Sink down in that warm water, deeply breathe in the aroma of lavender and settle your mind so that you can get a good night’s sleep.
Like lavender, frankincense has myriad uses, one of them being stress-relief and calming. Its earthy, woodsy scent is known for supporting healthy skin and respiration as well.
Simply inhaling the scent of an essential oil is thought to send messages to the part of our brain that influences our emotions and nervous systems. One great way to use frankincense for calming is by placing one drop of frankincense in your hands, rubbing them together and cupping them over your face as you breathe in deeply. This is part of my boring self care routine and makes a big difference in my daily overall wellness.
Other oils that pair well with frankincense are lavender, lemon, orange, cedarwood and peppermint.

Due to its refreshing nature, peppermint is known for being a mood-booster and supporting anxiety and exhaustion. In my house, it’s known as my “reset button.” When I’m feeling worn out after a long day of teaching or overwhelmed with parenting two middle schoolers, peppermint is one way I snap out of the afternoon funk so that I can be present for my family in the evening.
Peppermint can be diffused or used topically (on the skin). Be careful when applying topically, however, because peppermint is a highly concentrated essential oil. Simply use a drop of carrier oil like olive oil or fractionated coconut oil along with a drop of the peppermint oil and rub on the temples, forehead, over the sinuses (avoiding the eyes) and on the back of the neck for immediate relief and calming support.
